We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

Knight and Day

James: Cruise looks to be kind of back on his game, but Diaz looks way out of place. I guess that’s the point, but I’m still not too interested.

Benn: Diaz is terrible, but Cruise looks like he’s having fun, and that goes a long way. I won’t be lining up for the film, but I’ll say this, “Hey, its better than ‘The Killers’.”

Dylan: I remember when the early trailer came out that made this film look like a comedy/action flick. Cruise was playing a goofy character which works for him now (especially after Tropic Thunder). But now they’ve made it look like an action flick and I’ve lost all interest in seeing it.

Fil: Yeah this looks kind of fun. I mean, it’s not something I’d seek out, but it looks better than The Killers. Then again, watching paint peel was probably better than that film.

Anna: Looks kinda fun.

Grown Ups

James: Wasn’t interested at all until Ebert gave it a good review. I mean in the past I found these guys funny, could they do it again? Probably not.

Benn: Watch old SNL episodes from the early 90′s instead.

Dylan: Rob Schneider is still alive?! Damn! This is anti-funny.

Fil: No. Not interested. None of these guys are funny anymore. And the comedy looks too…um…I guess the word I’m looking for is [pee turning blue because of the chemicals, but it's the adults who pee, not the kids]-ish. Fuck it.

Anna: I love most of the cast. I’d see it for $5 if I felt like watching something stupid and fun.

Restrepo [limited]

James: I feel like I heard good things about this, but it’s just not the kind of thing I’m that excited about.

Benn: This actually looks like a really good war documentary. It will be interesting to see the lifestyles and struggles from the soldiers’ raw, true perspectives. Equal parts raw and noble, which is always the best mix.

Dylan: I’m really interested in seeing this, if it were in close proximity. It’s the kind of doc that is for or against the war, rather taking you through what soldiers are dealing with… and there aren’t any bad old guy jokes from comedians past their prime.

Fil: This looks pretty damn good. Always interested to see a war doc. Somehow I doubt I’ll be seeing it until it’s streaming on Netflix.

Anna: I have a hard enough time watching war movies. And the trailer suggest elements of reality TV – I wouldn’t watch it.

Wild Grass [LA/NY]

James: Trailer looks kind of interesting.

Benn: The cinematography looks good, but…. the romantic element is just plain creepy. Despite the onslaught of apparent critical acclaim, I can’t get over the idea of the whole romantic stalker thing going on here.

Dylan: Yeah… I don’t think so.

Fil: I’ve gotta say, this looks to be the best release this week. Still won’t see it. BECAUSE THERE ARE NO DINOSAURS IN IT.

Anna: Looks like a normal drama with a psyched up trailer.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions. (Fil bases his on third impressions and wikipedia)

Toy Story 3

James: My love for Pixar is endless, and these characters are the ones that started it all (well technically a VHS of their previous shorts was, but you get the idea). I already have plans to see this Friday night.

Benn: Come on, did you not read my review?

Dylan: Pixar can do no wrong. I’ve never seen a bad Pixar film and I don’t think I’ll be seeing on any time soon. See it!

Fil: Do I really need to say anything about this? I don’t know anyone who hates Pixar. I’m sure I’ll see this at some point, and I’ll love it.

Anna: I’ll be seeing this after I get home from Sacramento. Pixar hasn’t failed yet. I’ve been waiting eagerly ever since it was rumored on IMDB.

Jonah Hex

James: I wanted this to be good, but I think it’s pretty clear that it’s not going to be. I’ve already heard it compared to Wild Wild West and Ghost Rider. Too bad. Go read the comic, it’s a good straightforward western.

Benn: Looks weak. Pass.

Dylan: Josh Brolin it too good for this. Megan Fox, however, is perfect as a trashy harlot in this trashy film. Avoiding it like the plague.

Fil: I like the character, and my fondest memory is definitely of an episode of Batman: TAS that he appeared on with Ra’s Al Ghul. Cool stuff, but I really doubt this will be a good film. Unfortunately, we have to wait for good DC movies.

Anna: This looks like a good idea (and comic) ruined by the rush to top Iron Man and Batman movies.

I Am Love [limited]

James: Despite the awesome Bernard Hermann-like score in the trailer, nothing here really grabbed my and I haven’t heard any critics muttering about this one. Maybe if I hear more.

Benn: Well, it looks visually stunning, and the sometimes cliched “trapped wife of rich family” story actually looks interesting. I’d give it a go.

Dylan: I have no idea what’s going on. There’s a white chick and Italian food and melodrama… that’s about all I could gather.

Fil: I have no idea what this is about. The trailer was…pretty? I dunno, this is a bad trailer.

Anna: The trailer was enticing, but it looks like an artsy drama. Not my kind of movie.

Cyrus [limited]

James: I’ve heard nothing but good things about this movie, I really look forward to catching it when it gets close to me.

Benn: I’m ambivalent towards the Duplass Brothers; some of their improvisational mumblecore stuff works and other parts don’t. John C. Reilly is a solid actor though, and I enjoy films with a bigger budget that still retain indie sensibilities.

Dylan: It looks like a comedy that will try too hard to be awkwardly funny. I like J.C.R and Marisa Tomei is nice eye candy (and talented. A good combination). I’d give it a shot if someone talked me into it.

Fil: You know, this just isn’t my kind of movie. I’m sure it’s good, but I doubt I’ll watch it until it’s streaming on Netflix.

Anna: I think it’s too early for Jonah Hill to try a serious role. This movie looks very awkward.

8: The Mormon Proposition [limited]

James: Trailer makes it look worthwhile, but it’s probably not something I’ll seek out with a lot on my plate.

Benn: I love a documentaries like this. Anything that puts the spotlight on the hypocritical, the corrupt, the shady, and the flat-dumb who have abused their power gets my nod of approval.

Dylan: This is a subject that pushes my buttons. The documentary looks very interesting, like a Watergate “follow the money” type of narrative. I’d see it if it were in close proximity and I had people to go with.

Fil: Man, don’t even get me started on Prop 8. But this looks like a really good explanation to all those people who were flabbergasted when the results came up. I’ll try to see this.

Anna: Fuck yeah, I’m seeing this.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions. Also, if you can read this column, you have too much time on your hands.

Get Him to the Greek

James: Aldous Snow was the highlight of Forgetting Sarah Marshall for me. I’d be down to see more of this character.

Benn: Love Brand’s Aldous Snow character, but I’m not crazy about Jonah Hill in anything but very small roles. Still, it just might be worth.

Dylan: I’m in a small minority that doesn’t think Russel Brand is entertaining. However, I did like Forgetting Sarah Marshall for reasons other than Brand, and P. Diddy (Diddy Dome Diddy Doo, or whatever he’s called now) looks kind of funny. If a group is going, I wouldn’t be opposed.

Fil: Russell Brand was the best part of Forgetting Sarah Marshall (that bitch) – so if given a choice between this and anything else but Splice, I’d probably see this.

Anna: I really liked Forgetting Sarah Marshall, so I probably wouldn’t go into this kicking and screaming. But it’s really not worth the movie ticket.

Killers

James: I feel like both of these two are usually the lesser of their normal romantic pairings, throw them into a tried and true formula and you get… sludge? This isn’t being screened for critics, a really bad sign for a comedy.

Benn: Whoever wrote the line,”Let’s just say I work for the blah blah blah and have a license to blah” should be publicly beaten with reeds.

Dylan: Just…. just, just no.

Fil: I think I’ll stay home and watch Mr. and Mrs. Smith True Lies instead. Then I’ll quietly drown myself for allowing this movie to be made.

Anna: I like Heigl, but this story is so unappealing.

Marmaduke

James: I always hated the Marmaduke comic strip, and the fact that he talks in this makes it even worse.

Benn: Go f*ck yourself.

Dylan: It’s movies like this that have me questioning Hollywood: Are they so scared to take a chance on an original idea that they resort to a stretch of an adaptation like this?

Fil: Is this movie based on the hilarious comic strip with the same name? Yeah? Then my answer is Fuck. No.

Anna: When I went and saw How to Train Your Dragon, there was a trailer for this. I must have been in a really good mood for this to look appealing, especially since it has Owen Wilson in it. But there is really no good reason to see this.

Splice

James: I hear this is kind of mis-marketed, and it’s a much different movie than it looks. I’ve also heard it’s pretty good, but pretty fucked up. I usually prefer to see these kinds of fucked up films at home where I can run away or take a break if necessary.

Benn: Director Vincenzo Natali has never been one to write a simple, high-concept scifi film (see: Cube). This looks like it will combine easy scares with very complex ideas.

Dylan: I’ve heard people talk about it with anticipation, and I do like Adrien Brody, but this doesn’t do anything for me.

Fil: Of all the movies out this week, I think this is the one I’m most excited about – I love the actors, and the premise seems sufficiently creepy. I’ll definitely be seeing this one. And James? You’re a pussy.

Anna: I’d rather go watch the Alien quadrology again.

Ondine [limited]

James: Trailer lost me about halfway through, it seems like it could be alright but simply not for me.

Benn: You know what? I think it looks charming and well acted. Besides, what else are you going to see, Marmaduke? (if answer is yes, see prior response to the film)

Dylan: Were they speaking English in the trailer? From what I was able to decipher, it The Little Mermaid with drinking and potential stabbing.

Fil: I wouldn’t say no to this – I guess we’re looking at a serious take on a mermaid movie? Sure, why not?

Anna: I honestly couldn’t understand a word they were saying in the trailer.

Finding Bliss [LA/NY]

James: I’m sure this is pretty bad, but I did laugh a couple times during the trailer. Anyways I won’t be seeing it.

Benn: Eh….. it is what it is.

Dylan: Generally, any trailer that starts off with, “For (character’s name)” and tells you what the movie is about lacks any creativity and originality. So no, pass.

Fil: This…is not my kind of film, but I would totally watch it to hear all the funny porn titles. Also, I think a friend of a friend of a friend might have done a webseries that was along these lines?

Anna: This looks very poorly made.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions. Like the American Justice System.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

James: Because I’ve liked a lot of Bruckheimer films that even others have not, and because I have a nostalgia for the franchise, I may try to see this, this weekend. But because of the mediocre reviews, it may not happen as well. But if I see anything this weekend, it will be this.

Benn: You know what, I don’t have a problem with the Disney/Bruckheimer adventure films; they’re easy fun and very enjoyable.

Dylan: The Bruckheimer/Disney Pirates films, though void of making any sense, were decent popcorn flicks. Kingsly is awesome, but I’m not sure about Gyllenhall. He doesn’t see like the action type of actor. If I’m dragged to this, I’ll do it without much complaining.

Fil: You would think I’d be excited about this. I love Pirates. I love Bruckheimer. But seriously – how the FUCK is Jake Gyllenhall a prince of PERSIA? Also – the coolest thing about this (the parkour action) looks soooo bad. No no no no no.

Anna: The only thing that barely tugs me about this movie is Kingsly, but I just don’t care to see another generic period/action/adventure/romance/CG piece.

Sex and the City 2

James: I managed to be offended just in one trailer, I just hate the tone of the dialogue, among many many other things.

Benn: Money, Fashion, Recreational Infidelity, Glamour For The Sake Of Itself and Charmingly Delivered, yet Hollow Wit? I’m starting to think no one took the works of Wilde or Fitzgerald seriously.

Dylan: So you have a bunch of scantily clad cougars going to the Middle East? I can only hope one of them gets stoned, and not in that fun college way.

Fil: If I’m not mistaken, does this, or does this not take place in a City? The title is misleading and confusing. I can only assume there will be sex in it at some point? Ugh, even that doesn’t make me want to see it.

Anna: Besides the fact that I’ve never seen the first one, I haven’t even watched the show. Seeing this would do nothing for me except for getting annoyed with Sarah Jessica Parker.

Micmacs [limited]

James: Love the director’s work, but due to time, I’ll probably see this way down the line after seeing a few of the gaps in his filmography I already have. Heard it’s pretty good, though.

Benn: Jean Pierre-Jeunet? I’m in. This movie looks great. Go.

Dylan: This is the movie you need to see this weekend.

Fil: Don’t forget City of Lost Children, Anna. This is going to be amazing. It also is monumental for being the first time that Benn and I agree on anything.

Anna: What I think doesn’t matter. Fil will probably make me see it since he loves Delicatessen and Dominique Pinon.

Survival of the Dead [limited]

James: Romero’s films just seem to get worse and worse ratings, next in line for me is Day of the Dead so I’ll hold off on this.

Benn: I’ve heard some pretty bad things about how Romero’s films have been getting worse since “Land of the Dead.” I might see this purely out of loyalty to Romero, but this probably won’t be very good.

Dylan: Not interested in this one, however, I am excited for the next installment, Sex and the City and the Dead.

Fil: I guess I can already watch this on demand on my X-Box? The hell?

Anna: Save for Max Brooks, I can’t stand Zombie-lore. This looks terrible.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

Robin Hood

James: Check out the upcoming podcast for my thoughts on these sort of epic movies. This looks pretty cool, but it also looks like more of the same from all involved. I’ll likely see it, so here’s hoping it’s good, but I’m not chomping at the bit.

Benn: It looks like a typical Ridley Scott epic (see: “Kingdom of Heaven” and “Gladiator”), which isn’t a bad thing. We may have seen this type of film countless times before, but you can’t argue with a strong cast and director. Go.

Dylan: It’s got the look and feel of an epic film, like Gladiator or Master and Commander, but I just can’t get myself excited to see this one. When the trailer ends with Russell Crowe charging into battle, it just feels bland and steril. I’d see it if I’m dragged to it.

Fil: I’ve gotta agree with James on this one. I love the people involved, but this seriously looks like Gladiator 2 mixed with King Arthur. I mean, I won’t shy away from it, but I just can’t get super excited about it.

Anna: What Fil said.

Letters to Juliet

James: Ah, cliche romantic comedies. I’m kind of running out of things to say about these types of films, they’re relatively inoffensive and often executed passably, but as a single guy, they provide nothing for me.

Benn: HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Dylan: Every time one of these new romantic comedies (?) comes out, I have this image of the writer or directer saying to themselves, “I’ve done it! I’ve come up with such a unique, brilliant idea that will make this movie stand out from every other romance picture. This is a masterpiece!” And then I laugh quietly to myself.

Fil: I guess as romances (I don’t even think this classifies as a comedy) go, this looks like one of the less terrible ones. I still wouldn’t touch it with an 11 foot pole.

Anna: This looks cute, but I really wouldn’t make an effort to see it. Although, they did just sort of tell the whole story in the trailer…ending and all.

Just Wright

James: This trailer got worse as it went on.

Benn: I’d pick this over “Letters to Boo-liet” a hundred times over.

Dylan: Honestly, I’m looking back at what films already came out. This week is not so good. And it’s got to be obvious that I’m passing on this dud.

Fil:I, uh, don’t even know what to say about this film. Is it a film? FOR FUCK’S SAKE THEY TELL YOU THE WHOLE STORY IN THE TRAILER. Save you time and money, just watch the trailer if you’re interested in seeing the movie.

Anna: The only thing appealing about this movie is Queen Latifah. But it isn’t enough, really.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

The Losers

James: I think this looks like it could be pretty cool and the buzz is good, so I’m going to see it with hopes it pans out.

Benn: It could be good, but it could be over-stylized garbage too. It will be interesting to see how this does against Kick-Ass.

Dylan: Thank god this came out before The Expendables; it would have been overlooked and passed over as the comedic version of the film. Still, looks like it could be a hoot. Sorry, but I’ll be seeing Paper Man this weekend.

Fil: I’m somewhat looking forward to this, it seems like it’ll at least be a good shoot ‘em up, but it’s also something I’ll watch because I’m not interested in anything else coming out this week.

Anna: If I were a comic book gal, I’d probably have more reason to see this. But the title is such a turn off.

The Back-Up Plan

James: Generic romantic comedy that doesn’t even hold up both halves of the interesting pairing dynamic? No thank you.

Benn: Remember when J-Lo disappeared from the spotlight and stopped turning up in movies? Those were the days. Still, if J-Lo wasn’t going to do it, you know Katherine Heigl would have in a heartbeat.

Dylan: Sorry J-Lo. I’m still scared from Gigli. Not happening.

Fil: What is the Back-up Plan? The trailer gives no hints. I WILL SEE THIS TO UNRAVEL THE MYSTERY.

Anna: Interesting idea, but I’m still not really in to romantic comedies. Only a different cast would give me a slight interest.

Oceans [4/22]

James: I think this is from a somewhat similar crew as Planet Earth right? That shit is amazing, but I’ll be honest I’m too lazy to make room for this in my schedule.

Benn: This nature documentary stuff is always breathtaking. Why wouldn’t you want to see this? What would you rather the see, The Back-Up Plan?

Dylan: What else was was Disney suppose to do with all that extra footage from Planet Earth? Might as well put it to good use. Besides, seeing animals do bat-shit insane bodily tricks is always a cool thing.

Fil: Yes. Nature documentaries are the SHIT. So hell yes I’ll be watching this in theatres buying it on Blu Ray

Anna: It looks wonderful, but I think I’ll devote my time to finishing Planet Earth before I try and see this.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

Date Night

James: This seems like a great rental to me, since I like both actors. If there’s impressive reviews, maybe I’ll see it in theaters but I’m running a bit behind at the moment.

Benn: Steve Carell and Tina Fey, you both can do better than this.

Dylan: I don’t care what anyone says, I think Tina Fey is one sexy mama. That being said, I’d only watch this movie for Tina. Other than that, this looks bland and uninteresting. Although I am enjoy the airbrushed cleavage.

Fil: This movie looks like it should be funnier than it is likely going to be. Sad, because I, also, love Tina Fey.

Anna: I really like Steve Carell (although, ironically, I don’t care for The Office) but I’ve never seen Tina Fey in anything. I might go see this is someone wanted to take me, but I won’t make an effort myself.

Letters to God

James: This looks absolutely horrible. I don’t approve of this movie with a spiritual agenda type of film-making, and this trailer proves exactly why: it’s dripping with cheese.

Benn: Spoiler alert: God doesn’t write back.

Dylan: Oh my dark lord! From the same guys as that gem, Fireproof. I’ll be having a snow-ball fight with Hitler before I see this movie.

Fil: Something has escaped from the Lifetime Channel…or maybe Hallmark?

Anna: Fireproof was rage inducing enough for me.

The Square [limited]

James: I already passed on a free screening of this film due to bad reviews.

Benn: Eh, suspense is more than fast edit cuts.

Dylan: As much of a fan of noir as I am, this does not look appealing at all.

Fil: This looks better than the previous two movies. Combined.

Anna: This looks like a combination of a British Butterfly on the Wheel and some other action/thriller. No thanks.

After.Life [limited]

James: This is the kind of B-movie I can get behind.

Benn: A creepy movie with Liam Neeson as the villain? I’m in.

Dylan: I like the cast and the plot is creepy enough for me. I’ll see it.

Fil: I, uh, really want to watch this. Christina Ricci in Wednesday Addams makeup? Yes. Please.

Anna: Liam Neeson? Check. Horror? Check. Thriller? Check. Potential next awesome and scary horror/thriller movie that I’d like to see? Yes, please.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

Clash of the Titans

James: I’m hoping this is good, it looks like it could be a ton of fun and Louis Leterrier has a pretty good track record for exciting but mindless action films. I’ve heard bad things about the 3D conversion though, so you might save your money on that.

Benn: Liam Neeson as Zeus in enticing, and I like Sam Worthington, but this looks like a Greek bust.

Dylan: When I hear Liam Neeson say, “Release the Kraken!” I get this guilty, tingly feeling that knows this film will only stimulate the part of my brain that craves mindless action.

Fil: Fucking fuck yes fuck I will be fucking seeing this. I don’t have any idea about whether it will be good or not. From what I hear though, I’ll probably be seeing it in 2D. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while.

Anna: Writing this a bit late, so I’ve already seen this. I really enjoyed it – very entertaining, especially CG-wise. Plus, some phenomenal imagination and portrayal of the gods and Mount Olympus. Definitely better than the 80′s version, if anyone’s seen that. But don’t look for the next Avatar or anything, despite Sam Worthington being in it.

The Last Song

James: Clearly this is not for me. But it looks corny even by the genre’s standards.

Benn: ”Sometimes you have to be apart from the people you love, but that doesn’t make you love them any less. Sometimes it makes you love them more.” This is the mantra of absentee fathers and lovers alike. I’m now awaiting a public apology from Nicholas Sparks for dumbing down his viewers, who don’t have much brain power to begin with.

Dylan: We should just nip this thing in the bud and just stop Nicholas Sparks from having his works adapted into screenplays. There’s nothing good about this movie, or its buck-toothed star.

Fil: Ugh. Hannah Montana GTFO of my movie theater.

Anna: Never read or seen anything by Nicholas Sparks and this doesn’t make me wanna start now.

Why Did I Get Married Too?

James: Wait they make sequels to these things?

Benn: Get it? ”TOO” is a homonym. Seriously, Perry’s next film should be a documentary called, “Why Do People See My Films?”

Dylan: Tyler Perry is to film what Saddam Hussein is to responsible leadership.

Fil: No. no. no no no no nonononononononononononono. I have seen exactly 1 Tyler Perry movie to date – AND I WAS FOOLED INTO IT. DAMN YOU STAR TREK.

Anna: I’ve only ever seen part of a Tyler Perry movie. I don’t personally have anything against his movies, but I don’t have any inclination either.

Warlords [LA/NY]

James: I don’t watch a lot of martial arts movies. Is this one good? I don’t really care enough to try it in theaters. If the buzz is good, this could be a rental.

Benn: Anyone remember when Jet Li announced he was retiring from acting?

Dylan: … Oh sorry, I nodded of during the trailer. Did I miss anything interesting? I’m more excited for The Good, the Bad and the Weird for some strange reason.

Fil: I’m always down for a good Kung Fu movie. Count me in to rent this one (most likely) I’ve heard good things, and the movie looks beautiful, I just kind of wish the trailer didn’t suck so much.

Anna: Jet Li…again? Looks good enough, but the subject doesn’t interest me.

Don McKay [LA/NY]

James: Looks… adequate. It’s actually kindof up my alley genre wise and there’s actors to like here. Just nothing blows me away.

Benn: As much as I love Thomas Haden Church, this looks like a bland “thriller.”

Dylan: For a film that should have a lot of action, the trailer has no energy. Nothing about it looks terribly exciting or entertaining. Big ol’ pass on this one.

Fil: I’m not compelled to see this in the slightest. I’ll likely forget about it in the next couple of minutes.

Anna: I think I’ve already seen the major romantic/adulterous thrillers, so I can pass on this one.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions.

Hot Tub Time Machine

James: I’m super psyched for this, I love all the actors involved and the tongue-in-cheek nature of the comedy looks like a win-win situation for me. I will be seeing this before weekend’s-end if possible.

Benn: Too dumb to fail. Go!

Dylan: This reminds me of “Snakes on a Plane,” awesome premise backed by even awesomer title, except this looks like it won’t try and take itself seriously. Seeing it at midnight!

Fil: Since I have no time or money, I’ll say I would love to see the hell right out of this, but am not going to be able to. Yes, I think I shall use the sad face. =(

Anna: Not interested. Wouldn’t even rent it. Can’t stand John Cusack and it looks completely stupid.

How to Train Your Dragon

James: The buzz on this has been really good, and I’m always down for a great computer animated film. Kung Fu Panda’s success gives me even more confidence that this will be pretty enjoyable.

Benn: This looks like it could be mildly entertaining to a kids and adults alike, though I have no real draw to go myself.

Dylan:For the type of crowd this movie is aimed at, it doesn’t look that bad. Plus it’s been getting good buzz from critics. I’ll check it out if I have the time.

Fil: Imma see this this weekend. That’s right. I don’t even care, dragons is awesome and I actually really liked Kung Fu Panda (more than Cars) so this is a definite watch for me.

Anna: Though Dreamworks is no Pixar, I’m excited for this. I enjoy watching the Shrek movies and all of their animated films have been good. So this looks fun. I’d definately like to see it in theaters. And hey, I love dragons!

Greenberg [limited]

James: I really don’t know what to think of this one, the buzz I heard early on in development was good but I’ve seen the trailer a half a dozen times and it never seems to grab me. Seems unrelatable for some reason.

Benn: Although this kind of hipster/indie trend of crushing indifference for the sake of itself tends to bother me, the performances and overall story seem solid enough to get me into the theater. Pus, it would be nice to see Ben Stiller step out of his comfort zone a little.

Dylan: Normally I’d say no because of the incredibly strong hipster vibe, but I did enjoy “The Squid and the Whale.” Since it’ll be at my theater, I’ll have to see it at some point.

Fil: Um, I guess I’d see it if someone told me I’d get laid by taking someone to it. Fellas? Any takers? Other than that I really don’t get the whole I’m 40 something and I don’t know where my life is going vibe.

Anna: I’m a fan of Ben Stiller. This looks like an intellectual comedy and I love those. I’d rent it.

Chloe [limited]

James: Love the actors involved, and originally the plot turned me off, but the indication that there might be something more than adultery conflicts pulled me back in. I’d be interested to know the critical response to this one.

Benn: Judging from the cast and trailer, it might be a pretty decent sexual thriller.

Dylan: Not my kind of film.

Fil: Julianne Moore is way hotter than Amanda Seyfried. Have you seen Boogie Nights…or Children of Men? I won’t hesitate to say that I don’t care whether or not I see this movie.

Anna: I really like the cast here, but I’m not sure that the subject is that compelling. I dunno, maybe if I were in an adulterous mood…

The Eclipse [LA/NY]

James: Twilight Saga title aside, this looks like it could be good, but it certainly didn’t grab me enough to make me want to pursue it any time soon.

Benn: Intriguing. Not really sure how the supernatural element fits in, assuming it does at all. The love triangle looks a tad dense though. Better than “The Bounty Hunter” though, I’m sure.

Dylan: Looks interesting. Gotta love that sordid kind of love triangle kind of movie. Netflix!

Fil: This actually looks pretty good to me. I won’t be seeing it on the basis of not having money. I may rent it down the line…like at number40 on Netflix or something.

Anna: Is this a horror movie or a drama? Either way, I’ve almost given up on finding good horror movies and this looks way too dull.

Waking Sleeping Beauty [LA/NY]

James: The buzz on this is great, and my appreciation for hand drawn Disney fair makes me definitely want to see this. I have no problem waiting for the rental though, as with most documentaries.

Benn: I’m not particularly passionate about Disney films, but I love a good “behind the scenes” documentary.

Dylan:

Fil: This would be a number 1 priority for me. I really really hope I can see this sometime. Even if it is only a rental.

Anna: This looks interesting. I’d like to see it, but I don’t know how easy it is to find places to watch documentaries.

We enter another week of “Taking Stock,” our weekly column in which the entire staff tells you what they think of the movies coming out this week based on very little knowledge and first impressions. Also, today is James’ birthday!

Green Zone

James: This movie is basically a politically inclined Jason Bourne film, right? I’m interested, but I wonder if it will do well enough at the box office.

Benn: Looks way too much like The Bourne Identity, but I like Matt Damon, and I do did like Greengrass’ approach towards the last two Bourne films. I’d see it, even if it is Jason Bourne Visits the Middle East.

Dylan: It’s what would happen if Jason Bourne didn’t have amnesia. Maybe some political commentary condemning the Middle East quagmire? Can’t really get excited to see this one.

Fil: You guys, Jason Bourne is Wolverine in a Matt Damon body. That has nothing to do with whether I want to see this or not. And I could really care less.

Anna: Now that I’ve seen the fuss concerning The Bourne Identity (yes, I know everyone is going to put that title in their stock – but how can you not?) I know I can skip this. I just didn’t care for Bourne, I just don’t care for Matt Damon, and I just don’t care to see another war movie with epileptic-inducing trailers.

Remember Me

James: Pass.

Benn: No.

Dylan: God awful!

Fil: I suppose the fact that this movie doesn’t star all the usual suspects makes it about a .7 on my “to see” scale. Meaning I would rather watch this than The Notebook or Dear John, but not by much.

Anna: If I had to choose between this and Twilight, I’d pick this. Is that saying much? At least Pattinson’s face doesn’t look like his face has athlete’s foot here.

She’s Out of My League

James: I like Jay Baruschel, but everyone else here seems to be stand-ins for the Apatow crowd, instead of the real thing. If I felt this had the Apatow stamp of approval, I’d go. Since it doesn’t, I won’t.

Benn: My only gripe is Baruschel is hardly a 5. In fact, him landing Alice Evans doesn’t seem entirely impossible to me. All the same, it looks fun, and I tend to enjoy the Apatow gang anyhow. Go for it.

Dylan: Introducing, “I Can’t Believe It’s Not Apatow.” It’s got that same Apatow look, same flavor, but guess what? It isn’t Apatow. Get it now at your local cinema (or not).

Fil: Unlike my co-website people, I don’t think Apatow is the hottest shit since yesterday night. This movie has terrible titling and terrible advertising, but in general, it looks okay. I still wouln’t pay to see it, but then, I didn’t pay to see Superbad, Knocked Up, or Funny People.

Anna: I think Jay Baruchel is one of the new “ugliest” people in my book. I can’t stand his face and I can’t stand his acting, and I’m an Apatow fan. I’m tired of dating movies based on looks and misunderstanding.

Our Family Wedding

James: At first I was going to just say it’s not my thing, but by the end of the trailer I was convinced it’s horrible.

Benn: ”He’s black, she’s Hispanic; how could they possibly relate!?” This could be funny if they were going for an ironic farce, but no. Honestly, the idea of a film revolving around the taboo of a mixed marriage is pretty offensive. That, and it stars Carlos Mencia. Actually, that may be worse.

Dylan: Proving racial tension is still funny (?) The irony is Mencia isn’t even a Mexican… or a comedian… more of a douche-bag.

Fil: I would just like to know how they came up with the idea of having the goat eat Viagra and how they ever thought that would be funny to anyone who is not 4 years old. Also, Forrest Whitaker, WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING IN THIS MOVIE?

Anna: Culture clashing date/wedding movies. Hardly comedic, entertaining, or original.

Mother [LA/NY]

James: I’ve heard a lot of good buzz about this one. It won’t necessarily be a priority, but I’d love to catch it on video.

Benn: I’m not really sure what director Bong Joon-ho has up his sleeve with this one, but then again, that’s what intrigues me. I’d like to see if it lives up to the hype.

Dylan: If I can find time, I’ll try and see this one.

Fil: I can already tell you, I’m not going to see this. But I wouldn’t mind seeing it.

Anna: I love seeing foreign films, but I probably wouldn’t make an effort to see this. Gorgeous trailer, though.
