Well, it is a new year, and with it a new slew of highly-anticipated Hollywood blockbusters, not to mention more regular content from the site. No doubt many of you have kept up with the rumor mill of Hollywood; oodles and boodles of remakes, reboots and superhero sagas are being planned for the big screen.

Which ones are you eagerly awaiting? Which ones are you eagerly awaiting to hate on? Following the jump are some of the films we’re most excited for, and some that we’re complaining about already.

Reboots/Remakes

Most Excited: Robocop

Robocop is an amazing picture; it looks great, it’s violent, bleak, funny, engaging, and just plain well made across the board. Director Paul Verhoven has always had a way with making a picture sleek, yet unrelentlessly gritty at the same time, and in that sense, Robocop is his American masterpiece.

So obviously, a reboot of Robocop would be cinematic sacrilege then, right? Right, unless the man pushing for the reboot is Darren Aronofsky. Although MGM’s bankruptcy has halted the project, Aronofsky is still intent on making the film, so there is hope yet.

I’ve said it time and time again: reboots or remakes aren’t inherently a bad thing depending on who is involved. Aronofsky is a fantastic filmmaker; he is visceral and intense in style, and he knows how to tell a story of transformation in a very bold, unrelentless fashion. Bottom line: I want to see Aronofsky’s Robocop.

Least Excited: Highlander

Like Robocop, Highlander is one of the great Eighties masterpieces; it’s flashy, ridiculous (an “Egyptian” Sean Connery), and featured a powerhouse score from Queen. However, several sequels have proven that Highlander should have adhered to its own mantra: “There can be only one.” Each sequel has been exponentially worse than the one that came before, and that digression of quality is not likely to change just because someone has decided to label the next film a “reboot” instead of a “sequel.”

Yet, is it not hypocritical to give the thumbs up for Robocop and not Highlander? It would be, if a filmmaker of Aronofsky’s caliber were helming the project. Unfortunately, Justin Lin, director of Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift will be behind the camera for the reboot. For the record, Lin has said that he is thinking about using the music of Queen for the film. Any Highlander fan knows that there are three things absolutely necessary for a Highlander film: swords, quickenings, and Queen. Anyone who needs to think about using any of these is not equipped to handle a Highlander film.

And one more thing: Clancy Brown IS the Kurgan. No substitutes.

Sequel/Prequel

Most Excited: Ghostbusters 3

It’s about time.

Even though Sylvester Stallone has had the corner market on the “out of retirement” franchise films for the last few years now, I think it is safe to say that, while we have been watching all the Eighties action icons return to the big screen, we were all waiting for Egon, Ray, Winston and Venkman to mop the floor with them with parapsychological wit.

I will be the first to admit, some of Dan Aykroyd’s ideas are worrisome, particularly his obsession with featuring a new tam of young, sexier Ghostbusters (Eliza Dushku and Anna Faris’ names have been dropped). However, the opportunity to see these guys dust off their old proton packs and smart-ass their way to the edge of the hereafter has a lot of potential. And who doesn’t want to see Bill Murray in top form again anyway?

Why God, Why?!?!

Least Excited: Big Mama’s House 3

This is another installment of that one movie where Martin Lawrence dresses up as a fat lady and tries to not get discovered. Hijinks (or should I say “lowjinks?” ZING!) ensue.

Fat suits and drag: does Eddie Murphy know Lawrence is stealing his thing?

Superhero Film

Most Excited: Thor

Thor has always looked promising: a virtually no-name actor to play Thor (Chris Hemsworth), a well-respected director who isn’t on Hollywood’s speed dial (Kenneth Branagh) helming the film, and making a movie about one of Marvel’s more unconventional superheroes.

For one, the Thor trailer doesn’t have the “action scene, one liner, shirtless star, smarmy quip” setup that panders to the lowest common denominator (see: The Green Lantern). Given his repertoire of Shakespeare film adaptations, Branagh is an interesting choice who may steer this big-budgeted superhero flick into a different direction. And if Hemsworth can deliver anything like his surprisingly intense, ten-minute performance in Star Trek, he might give us the most compelling superhero since Iron Man.

Least Excited: Captain America: The First Avenger

Granted, no trailer and a handful of production stills offer nothing to go on, but I have little faith in this movie.

In the Marvel universe, Captain America is the quintessential leader of men; and yet, they gave this role to Chris “poor man’s Ryan Reynolds” Evans. In most of his films, Evans’ dialogue is comprised of quips, and the few serious films he has been in, save for Sunshine, have been clunkers.

Jim Johnston is directing the film, and although he isn’t terrible, he’s not stellar either; Honey, I Shrunk the Kids is a classic, The Wolfman was awful, and The Rocketeer exemplified his gift for gee-whiz wonderment, and his ineptitude for depth. If anything, Johnston is not reliable enough to fully trust with something as big as Captain America.

Furthermore, the whole Avengers thing has become more of an obligatory cinematic franchise than anything else. Adding the “First Avenger” title onto the film suggests that it will be, simply, a piece of an eventual whole. Although Thor has the same potential conflict, something tells me Captain America will be a self- conscious opening act to The Avengers, rather than a solid stand-alone film about Captain America.

In 2009, Swedish film Let The Right One In opened in the U.S. and achieved a considerable amount of success critically, as well as commercially (as far as foreign films are concerned). This year, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo conquered the literary world and made quite an impact on the big screen. Needless to say, it’s been a very good few years for the Swedish film industry.

Soon after the success of Let The Right One In, it was announced that Hollywood would remake the film with Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) helming the project, an idea that fans of the film, both here and in Sweden, found to be in bad taste. Now that The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has garnered some attention, it has been announced that it too will be remade in America. Outrage may be too strong a word to convey people’s opinion of these rushed remakes, but the general consensus regarding this news tends to be vehemently negative.

This isn’t the first time Hollywood has remade a foreign film; its been going on since other countries started making films really, and the interesting thing is the remakes aren’t always bad. Whether they are as good as the original or live up to their predecessors is up for debate, as that opinion is hardly ever objective, but many remakes themselves have been pretty good. Akira Kurosawa’s “Eastern”, The Seven Samurai jumpstarted the man-on-a-mission film, and was remade by John Sturges as The Magnificent Seven, which turned out to be a great Western. Christopher Nolan’s Insomnia was remade from Swedish filmmaker Erik Skjoldbjaerg’s film of the same name, and both were incredible neo-noir films.

If remakes were an all-around terrible idea, than no remake would turn out good, but if films like The Magnificent Seven and True Lies (yes, it’s a remake) can turn out well, it’s fair to assume that the quality of remakes are circumstantial.

Several films have been based on novels or plays; there is never to much hub-hub made when The Importance of Being Earnest is remade for film for the umpteenth time, unless it turns out to be a terrible adaptation. Akira Kurosawa has adapted several Shakespeare plays into film; King Lear turned into Ran, and Macbeth became High and Low, to name a few. Furthermore, Kurosawa’s Yojimbo was his take on the classic “stranger comes to town” Western formula previously used in many films. Yojimbo was then remade by Sergio Leone as, A Fistful of Dollars, which jumpstarted Clint Eastwood’s career and lead to The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly, one of the greatest Westerns ever made, if not even the greatest.

Film is the most common medium for entertainment in the Twentieth century, just as plays and novels were in the past. Film, at its core, is just storytelling, and many novelists, playwrights and screenwriters have all borrowed, taken or stolen something from some story somewhere. Just as novels are adapted to film, remakes of other films aren’t inherently bad; it’s just the reinterpretation of someone else’s story. Ultimately, it comes down to what the filmmakers do with the source material, what creative differences those filmmakers apply to it, and, most importantly, whether or not the film is any good.

There is, however, something else going on concerning the upcoming remakes of Let The Right One In and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Two successful foreign films being remade almost immediately after their U.S. releases resembles an agenda, or worse, a trend. Whereas remakes like The Birdcage were made long after the original debuted, remakes made for the sake of remaking them isn’t filmmaking; it’s cheap, repetitive crap being peddled for easy profit. Look at Chris Rock’s remake of Death at a Funeral; what was once a witty, masterfully executed farce from Great Britain has now become a comedy that relies on stereotypes, bad slapstick, and Tracy Morgan.

What’s most offensive about this approach is that the sole motive is profit. The studios don’t respect the original as a great film, nor do they give a damn about adding something unique to it. They’re just trying to latch on to the swelling reputation of the film and ride that wave of success for all its worth. It’s insulting to the film, the cast and crew, and the foreign film industry.

What sets these two films apart from other remake endeavors is the space of time between the projects. Let The Right One In came out last year, and The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo is out right now. Why are ideas of remakes already in the works? The very thought shouldn’t even occur in any filmmaker’s mind. Let the films run their course, enjoy the success that its due, then settle a bit in the ether before throwing the “remake” card on the table. Too soon guys, too soon.

Dragon Tattoo is still being discussed, so it will be a while before people get really mad. So far, George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp’s names are being dropped for the role of disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist. Talented as they may be, Clooney and Pitt are too polished for the role, and the character isn’t a whimsical goth nymph, so Depp is out. David Fincher, director of Se7en, Zodiac and Fight Club, is the favorite to direct the project, which could prove interesting if the project wasn’t such a disgrace to begin with. The worst rumor is that Kristen Stewart is apparently in the running for the titular tattooed heroine, presumably so she can continue pretending to be Joan Jett for another year or so.

NOT the next Lisbeth Salander

Let Me In, the American version of Let The Right One In, is slated for this fall. Aside from Reeves directing, the two young leads, Kodi Smit-McPhee (The Road) and Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass), are two fine child actors and just might give strong performances. Set in the Midwest to achieve America’s own winter pastoral wasteland, the film takes place amidst the Reagan era, which could provide a unique, regional spin on the story. Or it could turn out to be the big, Americana cow pie everyone expects it to be. Only time will tell.

Let Me In producer Simon Oakes discussed the film, saying, “This is making an [already] astonishing story… more accessible to a much larger audience.” That statement in and of itself contains the conundrum of foreign film remakes: shouldn’t people overcome their fear of reading and watch foreign films anyway? Then again, if people are initially wary, or even unaware, of the release of foreign films, what’s wrong with introducing them to the mainstream public via an American remake? Hopefully, they will seek out the original soon thereafter.

Naysayers will say nay, but one cannot casually dismiss all foreign remakes, foolish as they sound. On the one hand, those who remake a film, foreign or otherwise, for the sake of a guaranteed increase in projected profits are nothing more than cinematic plagiarizers. On the other hand, some of these filmmakers may be doing it out of earnest; maybe doing the wrong thing, but for all the right reasons. Fortunately, you can always tell a good film from a bad one, one made to tell a story and one put together for easy money. Those capitalizing on a trend should stay behind borders and try something else. As for those who claim to have noble, artistic intentions? I hope you’re up for the challenge, because we’re all watching.

Last week, Sam Raimi walked away from his contract with Sony to make the next three Spiderman films, and took the film series’ principle cast with him. As a result, Sony is planning to reboot the series entirely.

Citing disagreements over deadlines and creative differences, Raimi decided to leave the project in Sony’s hands. Currently, Sony has given screenwriter James Vanderbilt (The Rundown, Zodiac) the task of re-writing Spiderman. Vanderbilt’s script reportedly focuses more on character than Raimi’s version, and will follow Peter Parker as he deals with the responsibilities of his newfound powers along with the everyday problems of being a high school student. That’s right, Peter Parker is going back to high school.

I think it’s fair to say that everyone has mixed feelings about this sudden overhaul of the Spiderman legacy. Raimi’s Spiderman trilogy has done extremely well in the box office and with critics (save for part three), and, along with the X-Men films, jumpstarted Marvel’s big move to the big screen with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk, along with the upcoming films based on Thor, Hank Pym and the rest of the Avengers. However, the idea of rebooting a film series that only just began less than a decade ago suggests that Hollywood has indeed gone reboot crazy, which does pose a threat to some of our more beloved cinematic heroes.

Hollywood’s creative brilliance aside, is this particular plan to reboot Spiderman wise, or should we just let sleeping arachnids lie?

Reboots are always intriguing in theory, but its practice is rather unpredictable. On the one hand, its always fun seeing the same story through the eyes of another filmmaker, and the same characters portrayed by different actors. Take Batman, for example. Same character, same general story, but the differences between the Nolan and Burton versions are like night and day, yet fascinating to compare. Both filmmakers took their own interpretations of the Batman saga to the screen with considerable success, and in turn, the audience got to witness two different interpretations of Gotham City and its favorite dark knight.

Then again, a reboot can always be handed to a filmmaker who bastardizes the vision, leaving legions of fanboys and casual admirers with a bitter taste in their mouths. Just look at the Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever and Batman and Robin; a third and fourth take on the Batman legacy that sucked out loud. With its glossy, gothic camp and rubber nipples, Schumacher’s take on Batman is still seen as one of the most notorious jokes in Hollywood history; Warner Brothers was better off leaving the series alone post-Burton.

According to "Spiderman 3", looking like Pete Wentz means you're evil. Actually, that might be true in the real world too.

However, without Schumacher’s sado-masochist carnival of bat-horrors, we wouldn’t have Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, which showed the world that superhero films could be taken seriously. Though Spiderman and Spiderman 2 were very well received and remembered, Spiderman 3, with it’s shallow characterization, emo haircuts signifying evil and impromptu dance numbers (?), ruined the Spiderman legacy and seriously shook the public’s confidence in Raimi to continue the series. This being the case, the real question we have to ask is whether or not this reboot of the Spiderman series will be rebirth, or will act as that last drop of rain that washed the spider out.

With Vanderbilt’s character-focused script in mind, it might be nice to see a new beginning for Peter Parker. Tobey Maguire did a good job in the role, but he never made much of an impression while out of costume; as Peter Parker, things just happened to him, like Uncle Ben’s death or his chronic unemployment, but we never really got to see how these things affected him on a personal level, aside from his superhero career acting as a welcomed escape from the real world. Plus, Maguire’s sarcasm always felt a bit forced, and it would be really nice to see a wisecracking Spiderman again.

Rumor has it is Marc Webb has been picked to direct the new Spiderman film, which adds more promise to this hasty reboot strategy. Judging from his recent success with (500) Days of Summer, Webb knows exactly how to bring the audience into his characters’ own little world. Although we’ve yet to see how Webb can direct an action sequence, his pop culture sensibilities will do him good in asserting the wonder and youthful excitement that has always made Spiderman one of the more fun superheroes in the crime fighting community.

Of course, my biggest concern lies in the new setting: high school. When I think of superheroes stuck in high school, I think of Smallville, one of the worst shows in the history of television. The last thing I want to see is Peter Parker thrown into a world of trite melodrama, flat characters, and the idea that no matter how difficult it is to save the world week-to-week, high school will always be infinitely more relevant and important in one’s life. Maybe its just me (it shouldn’t be), but I don’t want to see a scene in which Peter can’t decide whether he should go out patrolling or study for his Algebra test tomorrow. I don’t want to see a scene were Peter gets shoved in a locker by Flash Thompson, or can’t muster up the courage to ask Mary Jane out, or suddenly remembering that he didn’t do is science report because he was too busy apprehending Mysterio.

Only time will tell, really, what will become of the world’s favorite webslinger. All we know is Vanderbilt has written a script, and Webb is in talks to direct; both of which look like promising choices. So long as Taylor Lautner and a redheaded Vanessa Hudgens are not cast in the lead roles, this new reboot may not be horrible. After all, it can’t be any worse that Spiderman 3.

My vote for the role of Spiderman goes to this guy.
